Overview

To ensure satisfactory performance, asphalt pavements in Western Australia are sampled and subjected to quality assurance checks, including asphalt density. This destructive extraction of cores is often a costly and time-consuming process. The search for a reliable, non-destructive and rapid test that delivers results comparable to coring led the WARRIP to identify the potential use of the nuclear thin layer density gauge for testing purposes. Like other road agencies in Australia that currently use nuclear density for testing asphalt density, WARRIP’s investigation will continue to delve into the optimal use of this method in WA.
